The Acadiana Flow
Measurement Society was started in 1965 by a group of pipeline and production
personnel with help from the University of Southwest Louisiana.
The society was chartered to advance the study of measurement.
The original focus of the group was gas measurement.
However, the society has since expanded to include liquid and
NGL measurement.
Originally,
we held monthly meetings to share our knowledge of the gas industry
and to keep abreast of the latest technology. Each meeting has a guest
speaker and the topics range from manufacturer’s latest efforts to industry
standards. Often other subjects or problems are brought up and informally
discussed at the dinner table. Periodically, the meeting location was
changed. But the meeting
has remained at the Lafayette Petroleum Club for the decade. The Lafayette
Petroleum Club has meeting rooms and a smorgasbord dinner which suits
the needs of the society well.
Our meetings
also serve other useful functions. Measurement people new to the area
can meet their counterparts. This is convenient for scheduling tests, locating needed items,
and discussing topics unique to the area. We are in our 22nd year of
producing a measurement short course and exposition each spring.
The Short Course uses a seminar format of 45 minute presentations.
The presentations are measurement specific in nature. While vendors
continue to provide speakers, a recent trend has been to utilize more
"end-user" speakers with varied experiences with equipment,
problems, and solutions. The Short Course endeavors to present new material
each year and this sets us apart from other industry short courses.
We do this for several reasons.
Short courses react to changing industry trends quicker than
regular courses and we
attempt to stay on the leading edge of these changes. Some of our attendees
can only attend one course a year. By changing the content each year,
the Short Course maintains interest for new and for repeat attendees.
With six individual seminars presentations every hour on the same floor
as the exhibits, the attendees can customize their experience.
AFMS is a non-profit
organization, with all proceeds used to operate the society and provide
measurement training. The society has strengthened its ties to the University
of Louisiana at Lafayette. A scholarship fund is established for the
College of Engineering, Industrial Technology.
This scholarship is presented to a local high school graduate
each year. We hope to encourage
graduates to investigate and possibly choose oil and gas measurement
as a career opportunity.
