A.F.M.S. Newsletter - January 1998 Issue

P.O. Box 60426, LAFAYETTE, LA 70596 - PHONE/FAX : (318) 993-AFMS (2367)

The topic for the January meeting is Multiphase Measurement and Meters. The speaker is David West from Houston with Daniel Measurement and Controls. David will discuss the various methods available to measure oil, water, and gas simultaneously.

Where: Lafayette Petroleum Club
111 Heymann Blvd.
When: January 10, 1998
Time: 6:00-6:30 PM-Social Half Hour
6:30 PM-Meal & Topic

Last month's Christmas meeting at Black's Oyster Bar in downtown Abbeville saw about 57 members and their guests in attendance. Absolutely no AFMS business was discussed, pleasing members and guests! The good company and relaxed atmosphere made for a good Christmas present from the society to all.

COMING IN FEBRUARY

A problem and detection method for amorphous solar panels used for EGM and automatic samplers.

MAIL ADDRESS CHANGE!

For those folks using the mail system to correspond with AFMS (like those in the next section!), the move to the new post office at 1830 Bertrand Drive caused some changes. The P.O. Box number changed to 60426 and the zip code to 70596. The phone book has the wrong zip code down!

GOING,GOING,GONE!!

The booth packets for the short course on April 7-8, 1998 are out - and coming in at the fastest rate in memory. Those venders who have not received a packet should phone the AFMS line to tell us where to send one. Remember, no booths are "held", and it's a "show me the money" to reserve. Don't assume the home office has sent the check! We have had some large companies with this problem in the past, only to not show. One hundred and twenty one packets were sent. This year, the 77 booths inside the ballroom are $375 each, while the premium 20 outside booths are $425 each.

No new members, since the Christmas meeting was for members only.

BATTERY LIFE EXPECTANCY FOR SOLAR-POWERED EGM

How long are your batteries lasting? An informal (& too small) survey shows several people getting about 3 years out of theirs. The batteries are designed to be fully discharged and recharged, and will develop a "memory" if used with a steady source of power, such as an AC to DC converter. Remember to test the batteries for miliamp draw, as well as the voltage. Some batteries will charge, but not hold current when a load, i.e. a 30 Ohms resistor, is left on for several minutes. Solar panels can exhibit the same problem. Some batteries will leak, causing loss of power and possibly electronic board failure if housed with same. Corrosion at the fusing points can be avoided by applying silicone when new.

TIP OF THE MONTH

QUESTION:

What is a "toggle effect" when referring to EGM?

ANSWER:

The sudden change of differential or static on a transducer or transmitter. The effect varies on the sevarity of the change. A 100" transducer was exposed to a 1100" differential, causing a 12" shift to the zero. The most common causes are: opening tap valves one at a time (worsened with isolation valves closed), starting compressor upstream of meter, opening or closing of valves on multi-run metering, opening meter run valve with no pressure on meter run, and plunger lift and gas lift flows.

The later are mostly unavoidable, since this production method is usually the only economical method to produce the well. Flow control can be used, though well performance may suffer. The DP cutoff is usually raised, since the toggle effect is always positive in this instance
