A.F.M.S. Newsletter - September 1997 Issue

P.O. Box 60426, LAFAYETTE, LA 70596 - PHONE/FAX : (318) 993-AFMS (2367)

Fall is here, even if the weather doesn't seem like it. Time yo send the kids back to school - and try some training and meet old friends at the society meetings. Your board met all three months through the summer, mostly discussing administrative items. Some new ideas were brought up. Phil Mariande, your friendly Daniel's rep. and VP for the society has the monthly talks for September through January lined up.

One exciting idea generated this summer was to have at least one meeting this season at noon. Many members and potential members are more available for meetings during a lunch period than at night. Depending on feedback (show up & speak up!) and attendance, this may be increased in future years.
The board approved the creation of an AFMS web page for use on the internet, though not available yet. Full use of the internet needs to be discussed and your board will solicit your opinions.

Another action the board made was to honor members by presenting a Lifetime Achievement Award from time to time. At the first meeting Sept. 16, Mr. William Sumrall Jr. will be so honored. Be sure to come and congratulate Bill as a way of thanks for many years of service to the society and the industry he represents.

The first topic for the first meeting is a good one. Four speakers from two companies will discuss Multiphase Metering. The presenters are: John Carter, President - Petro Traces Inc., Alan McArthur, Executive VP - same, Roman Bielski, Principle Scientist - same, and Dan Comstock, VP - SGS/RFGM.

Topics of discussion will be: Enhanced Gamma Densitometer - non regulated sources and wet gas measurement, Multiphase Calibration - Oil, water, and gas, Production Measurement Innovations - separators and pipelines, Loss Control - gasoline, crude oil, and leak detection.

Where: Lafayette Petroleum Club
111 Heymann Blvd.
When: September 16, 1997
Time: 5:30 - 6:00 PM - Drinks & cocktails, compliments of Petro Traces for members of good standing
6:00 PM Meal & Topics - NOTE START TIME DUE TO TOPIC LENGTH

The AFMS phone has been getting busy! The 1998 AFMS Measurement Short Course will be held April 7-8 at the Hilton. Vendors: Please wait for the booth packets before sending in checks. Yes, we've already had several requests to send in money. We appreciate the enthusiasm! Booth costs for 1998 are $375 for inside the ballroom and $425 outside the ballroom. Hopefully, the booth packets will go out by the end of the year.

Many of you receiving this letter in the mail are receiving the last regular AFMS correspondence, since you have not paid dues for the 1997-1998 year. The membership runs from May 1 to April 31 for each society year. If you are a member and have a reliable fax machine available, please give the number to an officer or call the AFMS number 993-AFMS. For you retirees and office-in-the-car type, don't worry, you don't have to buy a fax machine to receive these pertinent, picturesque pages! We will maintain a small mailing list.

TIP OF THE MONTH

QUESTION:

How do you size an orifice plate with only a calculator available

ANSWER:

Use this formula:
(P/R)1/4xOF=OL, where
P = Present DP in inches of water
R = Required DP
OF = Orifice ID found
OL = Orifice ID left
To obtain the fourth root, hit the square root key twice. If DP is a square root chart, enter DP as roots and take the square root instead of the fourth root.
Example: DP found 9", DP required 36", present orifice 2.000".
(9/36)1/4x 2 = 1.414", so either a 1.500" or 1.375" plate.
